"What exactly is a urologist
— and what do they do?"

A clear, myth-busting intro to how urology and andrology overlap, and when to see a specialist rather than wait it out. A good starting point if you're new to men's health care.

ED becomes more common as men get older, but persistent erectile difficulties should not simply be dismissed as an inevitable part of ageing. Health conditions, medications and vascular changes may contribute, and many of these factors can be addressed.
Not necessarily. However, persistent ED can be associated with cardiovascular risk factors because healthy blood vessels are important for erections. A medical assessment may therefore include consideration of cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Yes, stress, anxiety, depression and performance concerns can contribute to erectile dysfunction, either on their own or alongside physical causes. Persistent ED should still be assessed because psychological and physical factors can occur together. Rigiscan is a helpful and non-invasive test done to assess penile health.

ED refers to difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection that is firm enough for satisfactory sexual activity. Low libido, on the other hand, means having a reduced desire or interest in sexual activity.

The two can occur together, but they are not the same problem. A man may have a normal sex drive but struggle to maintain an erection, or have reduced sexual desire while still being physically able to achieve an erection.

Low testosterone can contribute to sexual difficulties, particularly reduced libido, but ED does not automatically mean that testosterone is low. Blood testing may be appropriate when symptoms suggest testosterone deficiency.
Oral PDE5 inhibitors such as sildenafil or tadalafil are commonly used as first-line medical treatment for ED when suitable. Treatment should also address contributing health and lifestyle factors. Other options may be considered depending on the cause, response to medication and patient preference.
No, it is a treatment option for selected men, particularly where vascular factors are thought to contribute to ED. A specialist assessment is needed to determine whether it is appropriate.
A penile implant is considered the most preferable treatment for severe ED, when other treatment approaches have not produced satisfactory results and when a patient prefers a definitive surgical option to his long-standing problem.
Yes, the two conditions are different but can occur at the same time. Some underlying health, hormonal or testicular problems may affect both sexual and reproductive function. An andrology-focused urologist can assess both concerns together.
An andrology-focused urologist has additional expertise in male reproductive and sexual health. For persistent, complex or treatment-resistant ED, seeing a urologist with a subspecialty focus in andrology can provide a more specialised assessment of sexual, hormonal and reproductive factors.
